Amadeus Consulting recently delivered the initial release candidate for the Consolidated Healthcare and Resource Management System (CHaRM TM), a checklist-based patient safety system designed by Parallax Enterprises, LLC, of Baltimore, Md.

The CHaRM TM system uses fully interactive and customizable checklists in conjunction with a medical "Heads-Up-Display," or HUD, to increase patient safety and decrease medical mistakes in the operating room. It is a collaborative effort between pilots and surgeons to bring successful aviation checklist methodology into the surgical suite, and was recently evaluated by medical professionals in a regional hospital during live procedures.

"The customizable checklist is at the core of the CHaRM TM system, and watching medical professionals create and then implement their own checklists was an incredible experience. There is no doubt in my mind that this technology, once implemented, will decrease surgical errors and increase patient safety," said Parallax chief executive officer, Dr. Jeffrey Woolford.

Amadeus Consulting and Parallax have been developing the CHaRM TM software since February 2013. Gesture sensitive cameras and high fidelity Microsoft® Kinect® technology enables surgeons to interact with the CHaRM TM HUD while maintaining a sterile surgical environment. Surgeons progress through the checklist, or view patient data, simply by moving their hands in the space directly above the sterile field, or by using basic voice commands. This allows them to stay focused on the procedure while providing the entire surgical team a unique awareness of the completion of the Critical Safety Steps followed in each surgery.

The CHaRM TM system also gives the support staff a tool to increase efficiency. Office dashboards quickly access patient details and manage day-to-day practice activities through model-view-controller (MVC), a software pattern for implementing user interfaces. A Microsoft® .NET framework gives the CHaRM TM system efficient memory management for storing patient data, along with advanced security features to protect data. Kendo UI, a query-based framework for rich user interfaces, provides surgeons intuitive navigation screens throughout the system.

"The Amadeus Consulting team was honored to form a strategic partnership with Parallax to develop a technology platform that is not only a game-changer, but makes a difference to the world," said Jay Millard, chief operating officer for Amadeus Consulting and Parallax board member. "We are thrilled that the system will literally save lives in the operating room."

The Gold Release of the CHaRM TM system is expected in the first quarter of 2014.
