AirStrip, the leading provider of mobile health care solutions that drive clinical transformation, has released a Web-based application that delivers a detailed visualization of usage patterns, adding further value among users of its clinical mobility applications. Intended to help maximize the significance of mobility across the enterprise, AirStrip INSIGHTTM helps identify areas of strongest clinical impact and determine how users are deriving the information and influencing patient care.

Using a robust analytic methodology, a wealth of background information from subject matter experts and a proprietary algorithm, AirStrip INSIGHT is the centerpiece of AirStrip IMPACTTM, a comprehensive offering that measures the value potential of mobility, then tracks actual achievement throughout the customer lifecycle using established clinical and business parameters. Patient privacy is protected on AirStrip INSIGHT since the data is aggregated. No individual data is captured, stored or identified.

"The health care marketplace is rapidly evolving, and hospitals must be able to justify every expense and identify ways to improve performance," AirStrip chief operating officer Matt Patterson, M.D. said. "AirStrip INSIGHT provides depth and context around a strong mobility strategy, illustrating the true value for patients, physicians and health systems."

Customers now using AirStrip INSIGHT include Dignity Health, one of the five largest health systems in the nation. Currently in the obstetrics departments across the hospital system, Dignity Health care providers use AirStrip ONETM OB to remotely monitor patients in labor, accessing data such as fetal heartbeats, maternal contraction patterns, and vital signs. Dignity Health uses AirStrip INSIGHT to assess the data over time, evaluating trends and usage patterns that may be useful for enhancing patient care. Since 2011, Dignity Health has proactively monitored patients more than 165,000 times using AirStrip ONE OB.

"AirStrip allows physicians to easily monitor and identify any potential complications during labor and delivery," said Suzanne Wiesner, MBA/HCM, RNC, director of Maternal/Child Health and Patient Safety at Dignity Health. "One of the most important advantages of this technology is that it improves communication between nurses and physicians, and allows caregivers to remotely monitor their patients at all times and immediately respond to the patients' needs."

An analysis of the full AirStrip customer base using AirStrip INSIGHT illustrates a sizable impact on clinical and financial operations in the labor and delivery service line of US health systems:

  • To date, AirStrip ONE OB was used to monitor laboring patients more than 3.3 million times
  • In 2013, AirStrip ONE OB was used to more closely monitor at-risk patients 1.2 million times, which can improve patient safety and act as a risk reduction tool
  • In 2013, AirStrip ONE OB was used to support clinically efficient rounding 150,000 times, which can improve workflow while greatly reducing paper waste

Another early adopter of AirStrip INSIGHT is Rockdale Medical Center in metro Atlanta, part of LifePoint Hospitals and current user of both AirStrip ONETM Cardiology and AirStrip ONE OB. Over the most recent two-month period, Rockdale Medical Center clinicians used AirStrip solutions 1,300 times to proactively monitor laboring patients and expedite collaborative care for more than 250 cardiac patients. Perinatal Informatics Coordinator June Cathey said AirStrip INSIGHT shows hospital administrators the ways they are deriving value and achieving key IT benchmarks.

"Information from AirStrip INSIGHT has been shared with department heads in clinical meetings, providing instructive usage patterns and concrete examples of where mobility usage can be strengthened to derive the full benefits," Cathey said. "From a value assessment perspective, this is a first - a tool that helps us understand the power of mobility to support our patient care and administrative goals, while also giving us the ability to audit the use of AirStrip applications."

As reported through AirStrip INSIGHT, across the country AirStrip ONE Cardiology has been used to expedite care for 37,000 cardiac cases, including critically ill patients with acute myocardial infarction and other life-threatening dysrhythmias, and patients with complex acute and chronic cardiac disorders. This can shorten cardiac consultation time, help reduce ED and ICU length-of-stay, and enable treatment decisions that reduce unnecessary hospital admissions.

Nancy Hudecek, RN, BSN, MS, AirStrip senior vice president of analytics, said mobility's value can be calculated from a wide variety of use cases. For example, an obstetrician can save time using AirStrip ONE OB to review a patient's current clinical status, instead of phoning nurses at the hospital. Or, a cardiologist can use AirStrip ONE Cardiology to review, edit and confirm ECGs from anywhere or remotely direct the care decisions when time is of the essence.

"AirStrip INSIGHT gives healthcare facilities actionable information to constantly fine-tune their mobility plans, and the incorporation of live, historic, and trended data about monitored patient populations and mobile clinician interactions can provide vital, ongoing organizational management support," Hudecek said.
