Jobs and helping local folks find employment is the topic at the upcoming Communitywide Jobs Workshop that will be held in Selma to assist the residents of Dallas County and related Black-Belt communities enable themselves to have the tools and resources they need in order to find meaningful employment.

The jobs workshop is free and open to the public and takes place on Tuesday, Jan. 26, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Selma's Ellwood Christian Academy, which is located at 1 Bell Road, Selma, AL 36701

The event is sponsored by execUnow, a non-profit organization, which provides customized training and development related events for business, government and individuals. Also present will be Selma Careerlink, a jobs-related company that will be there to assist attendees with employment applications.

Recent data obtained from the Alabama Department of Industrial Relations shows that while the state of Alabama's unemployment rate is at an average of 5 percent (Nov. 2015 data), the average rate for Alabama's Black-Belt counties (except Marengo and Sumter counties is at a rate of 8.4 percent or higher. For example, Dallas County's unemployment rate is 8.8 percent; Perry 8.9 percent; Lowndes 10.6 percent and Wilcox 13.5 percent.

Those statistics are indicative of why local residents who want full employment, but have yet to obtain it should attend this free workshop.

The featured speaker at the event is Alabama State University's vice president of Institutional Advancement, Zillah Fluker.

At ASU, Fluker oversees the University's Institutional Advancement Division, which includes the University's fundraising & development arm; as well as being a member of ASU President Gwendolyn E. Boyd's leadership team. She has over 12 years of corporate and human talent/capital management experience, as well as expertise in global staffing, diversity training, economic and workforce development.

The speaker is also heavily involved in economic and community-related events as a member of the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce; having recently served as the past president of its EMERGE Young Professionals organization. Fluker also brings global objectivity and insight to all of her work-related events, having been born in Zimbabwe and educated in England before attending and graduating from Alabama State University with a B.A. and then attending graduate school at Purdue University, where she obtained an M.B.A.

The coordinator for the workshop, Jelani Coleman, says this community development 'jobs' event is targeted to help local residents find employment and stability through job training, empowerment and learning to succeed in the workforce.

'This event will give local community residents an opportunity that they don't frequently get to have in this area,' Coleman said.
