ASEAN Association of South East Asian Nations : A Step Closer for Entry into Force of the ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons

JAKARTA, 20 January 2017 - Viet Nam and Myanmar deposited their Instruments of Ratification of the ASEAN Convention Against Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children (ACTIP) with the Secretary-General of ASEAN on 5 and 16 January 2017 respectively. This makes them the fourth and fifth Member State to ratify the Convention.

With two more Member States ratifying the convention, ASEAN's efforts to combat trafficking in persons in 2017 will be intensified.

The Convention will enter into force on the 30 day upon the submission of the Instrument of Ratification by the sixth ASEAN Member State.

Once the ACTIP enters into force, it will be implemented along with the ASEAN Plan of Action Against Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children. As trafficking in persons requires multi-sectoral collaboration, the relevant ASEAN Sectoral Bodies and Organs are currently discussing measures to coordinate cross-sectoral efforts in implementing the ACTIP and APA on both national and regional levels.
