President Kersti Kaljulaid met today in Kadriorg with the EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

The Head of State confirmed that ensuring a smooth process for the United Kingdom in leaving the European Union and co-operation between countries serves the best interests of both Estonia and the European Union in general. 'Estonia respects the results of the referendum, and we definitely want to maintain close relationships with the United Kingdom in the future,' confirmed the President of the Republic.

According to President Kaljulaid, maintaining the unity of the European Union represents the biggest challenge. 'It is important for the negotiations to end successfully and for the European Union to remain united,' she added. President Kaljulaid expressed support for Barnier in fulfilling such a responsible task.

Aspects of the European Union common market - the free movement of people, services, products and capital - were also discussed at the meeting. 'We definitely don't want the activities of Estonian citizens and enterprises to suffer,' stated the Head of State.
