A broad coalition representing traditional public, public charter, private, and online schools will gather to shine a spotlight on the importance of school choice at a rally timed to coincide with National School Choice Week.

The event, planned for January 25 at 9:30 a.m., will feature a rally at the Capitol followed by students touring the gallery and attending a session of the legislature. More than 1,000 people are expected to attend the event at the State Capitol Rotunda.

The goal of the event is to spotlight educational options for Hawaii students and tell student success stories. The celebration is timed to coincide with National School Choice Week (January 21-27, 2018), which will feature more than 32,000 events across the country.

"Hawaii's kids aren't one size fits all, so their learning options shouldn't be either," said David Miyashiro, executive director of HawaiiKidsCAN. "National School Choice Week is a great opportunity to highlight some of the many incredible schools who are helping to ensure that our keiki have diverse learning experiences, from arts integration and project based learning to blended learning and language immersion. I hope this week serves as a launching point for policymakers, parents, and the public to hear how kids are benefiting from these unique school models."

Event planners include Lanakila Baptist School, HawaiiKidsCAN, and Hawaii Public Charter Schools Network.

Held every January, National School Choice Week is an independent public awareness effort designed to shine a positive spotlight on effective education options for every child. Through more than 32,000 independently planned events across the country, National School Choice Week raises public awareness of all types of educational choices available to children. These options include traditional public schools, public charter schools, public magnet schools, online learning, private schools, and homeschooling.
