(Alliance News) – In the first half of the year, Stellantis produced 123,905 cars in Italy, marking a 34% decline compared to the same period in 2024, according to FIM-CISL.
As reported by Corriere della Sera on Tuesday, when including Atessa's commercial vehicles, the overall decrease is softened to 27%, totaling 221,885 units. Nevertheless, this figure still falls short of 2020 levels, the year marked by the Covid-19 pandemic.
The downturn exceeds union forecasts, which now estimate total annual production at 440,000 vehicles—less than half the target of one million by 2030 agreed with the government. Italian plants have a production capacity of around 1.5 million vehicles, but this year they will be operating at less than 30% capacity, far from the 70% required for profitability.
The crisis is attributed to both industrial choices—such as the lack of hybrid and low-cost models—and external factors: a weak European market, uncertainty over the electric transition, and US tariffs. Jean-Philippe Imparato, head of Stellantis Europe, had already warned of a tough 2025, postponing the company’s recovery to 2026 with new models and EUR2 billion in investments.
“All plants are facing serious difficulties,” warned FIM-CISL General Secretary Ferdinando Uliano, calling for talks with the new CEO, Antonio Filosa. Social safety nets are already being used for nearly half the workforce.
At Mirafiori, only 15,315 vehicles were produced, down 22%, nearly all Fiat 500 Bev. Maserati production stalled at just 140 units. Production of the 500 hybrid is planned to help relaunch the site, but the solidarity contract—with 40% utilization—remains in effect until August 3. In Modena, only 45 Maseratis rolled off the line, a 72% drop, with just 11 actual working days. Cassino recorded one of its worst performances ever, with 10,500 cars and a 34% decrease.
All eyes are now on Filosa’s upcoming industrial plan, which will feature a focus on Italy and a new strategy to revive Maserati.
