Mbda, the European missile and defense technology manufacturer consortium, and Leonardo have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to jointly build Directed Energy Fire Units, which integrate solutions developed by Mbda into laser weaponry.

This new Italian initiative complements capabilities related to laser systems developed by Mbda, a note points out.

Tests have already been conducted in Germany with a demonstrator developed by Mbda in cooperation with Rheinmetall.

The statement adds that the system to be developed in Italy will use two power classes, depending on the threat, and will be able to intercept and neutralize nano- and micro-drones of different composition. Initially, the fire units will be intended for use on naval units with possible future evolution for land use.

Mbda is a multinational joint venture between France's Airbus, Britain's Bae Systems-each with a 37.5 percent share-and Leonardo, which owns the remaining 25 percent.
