India’s Civil Aviation Ministry has launched a multi-tiered investigation and initiated a raft of safety reforms following the fatal crash of Air India Flight AI171 on June 12, 2025. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed within a minute of take-off from Ahmedabad, claiming the lives of all 242 people on board, including young medical students from the Meghani Nagar area.

According to a press release by India’s Press Information Bureau, on June 14, 2025, the country’s Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, accompanied by India’s Minister of State Murlidhar Mohol and senior officials, announced measures including technical inspections of all Boeing 787 aircraft in India. Of the 33 Dreamliners in service, 8 have already undergone checks, with the remainder undergoing urgent inspection.

The Indian Directorate General of Civil Aviation has also ramped up oversight of wide-body aircraft maintenance across the country. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau began its probe immediately, with black box recovery achieved on June 13. A five-member team is decoding the data to reconstruct the aircraft’s final moments. Separately, a high-level committee led by India’s Home Secretary will examine systemic issues and recommend policy reforms.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah visited the crash site and met victims’ families. Emergency control rooms and helplines were established, while Air India has deployed teams to assist affected families in both India and the UK.
