Airbus Defence and Space has announced that it is partnering with US company Kratos Defense and Security Solutions to equip the XQ-58A Valkyrie drone with an Airbus mission system, with a view to entering service with the Luftwaffe by 2029.
The Valkyrie, a three-tonne rail-launched stealth drone, is capable of flying 3,000 miles (over 4,800 km) at 45,000 feet (approximately 13,700 meters) and operating autonomously or alongside fighter aircraft.
Airbus says its open architecture will allow the system to be integrated into other future platforms. Mike Schoellhorn, CEO of Airbus Defense and Space, believes that this collaboration will accelerate Europe's ability to defend itself while strengthening NATO's transatlantic ties.
