OTTAWA--An advance estimate points to further pullback in Canadian factory trade in September, led by sales of petroleum and coal products and chemical products.

An early estimate of manufacturing sector sales indicates a fall of 0.8% last month, Statistics Canada said Friday.

The estimate was based on a weighted response rate to Statistics Canada's survey of roughly 70%. The official survey results, based on more complete data, are scheduled to be released Nov. 15.

Manufacturing sales pulled back in August, falling 1.3% from the month before to a seasonally adjusted 69.45 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about US$50.12 billion, the lowest level in more than two and a half years, the data agency reported earlier this month. The fall was driven by a retreat in sales of metals and lower prices for refined petroleum products.
