(Alliance News) - Webuild Spa announced on Friday that it has been awarded a EUR531 million contract for the construction of Lot 1 of the SS106 Jonica State Road, one of Calabria's most strategic road arteries, covering the section between the Coserie viaduct and the Corigliano Ovest junction.

With this award, Webuild is now working on 20 projects across Southern Italy, including the islands, with a total awarded value rising to approximately EUR16 billion. These projects provide employment for 9,500 people, both directly and indirectly, and have engaged 7,500 direct suppliers since work began.

The new section of the SS106 Jonica, commissioned by ANAS of the FS Italiane group, will consist of approximately 17 km of new state road, featuring highly complex engineering works including 15 viaducts and 3 overpasses totaling 3 km, as well as a 1.4 km twin-tube artificial tunnel.

For the execution of the works, the former Salini Impregilo expects to employ up to 500 people, both direct staff and third-party workers, also aiming to leverage the expertise and experience gained during the construction of the Third Mega Lot of the SS106 Jonica, where Webuild is already operational.

During construction, technologies will be adopted to enhance workplace safety, reduce the environmental impact of activities, ensure water and energy savings, and promote digital site management. In addition, a structural monitoring system for the infrastructure will be implemented once it is operational.

On the SS106 Jonica, Webuild will build a total of about 55 km of the new road. Work on the Third Mega Lot—the main project along the Calabrian stretch of the SS106, which will help connect the Ionian coasts of Calabria, Basilicata, and Puglia—has reached approximately 80% completion.

Currently, around 1,200 people are employed on the project, both direct and third-party staff, with a supply chain of over 880 companies involved since the start of works, 45% of which are based in Calabria.

In Calabria, Webuild recently also won the contract for the Paola-Cosenza doubling on the Salerno-Reggio Calabria high-speed rail line, commissioned by RFI, which will involve the construction of over 22 km of new line, including the main work, the Santomarco Tunnel, which will extend for 15 km.

Webuild shares are up 1.5% at EUR3.48 per share.
