Uber Technologies, Lucid and Nuro are collaborating to launch a robotaxi program for Uber's ride-sharing app.
Uber aims to deploy 20,000 or more Lucid vehicles equipped with the Nuro Driver over six years, the companies said Thursday. The first launch is expected next year in a major U.S. city.
The robotaxi will combine Lucid's vehicle architecture, Nuro's autonomy system and Uber's fleet management and network. Uber or its third-party fleet partners will own and operate the vehicles, which will be exclusively available on Uber's platform.
Uber plans to make multi-hundred-million dollar investments in Nuro and Lucid as part of the partnership.
Electric-vehicle maker Tesla launched its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, in late June.
