Taiwan has opened a new supercomputing center amid a push to boost its homegrown artificial-intelligence capabilities.

The launch signals Taiwan's transition from a hardware manufacturing powerhouse to an AI-enabled economy, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te said at the opening ceremony for the new cloud computing center on Friday, according to a statement by the president's office.

The Al data center houses Taiwan's most advanced supercomputer that is equipped with Nvidia's H200 chips and GB200 NVL72 systems.

The launch aims to demonstrate that aside from its advanced chip-manufacturing capabilities, Taiwan also possesses world-class strength in system integration and supercomputers, Lai said.

Taiwan is home to the world's largest contract chip maker TSMC and the world's largest contract electronics maker Foxconn Technology Group. The two companies, which both count U.S. chip giant Nvidia as a major client, produce AI chips and servers that make up the backbone of global AI infrastructure.

The AI data center is part of Taiwan's goal of undertaking 10 major AI projects, announced earlier this year, to ensure the island remains competitive in the new AI era. It aims to invest over 100 billion New Taiwan dollars, equivalent to US$3.2 billion, and generate over NT$15 trillion in economic value by 2040.
