DRESDEN (dpa-AFX) - The flight connection from Dresden Airport to Munich will be maintained in the coming years. Lufthansa has reached an agreement to this effect with Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, as confirmed by a spokesperson for the airport company. The news was first reported by the "Sächsische Zeitung" and "Leipziger Volkszeitung".
"This is an important signal for the region and the result of constructive cooperation between the Lufthansa Group, the Saxon state government, and Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG," said CEO Gotz Ahmelmann to the newspapers. At the end of October, he had warned of a possible cancellation of the route. At that time, Ahmelmann stated that due to high operating costs in Germany, the route was under review.
Leipzig/Halle and Dresden Airports Under Pressure
Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG operates both Leipzig/Halle and Dresden airports. The main shareholders are the states of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The airport company has been under pressure for years. Last year, it recorded its highest loss in history, totaling 53.5 million euros. Revenue fell by 2.9 percent to 186.2 million euros.
Several connections at both airports had already been discontinued previously. Lufthansa will eliminate the Leipzig to Munich route with the 2025 summer schedule. Its subsidiary Eurowings removed the Leipzig-Düsseldorf route from its program at the end of last year.
