:: Kenya's herding community suffers as a deepening drought kills livestock
:: Kajiado, Kenya / February 5, 2026
:: Emmanuel Loshipae, Livestock keeper
"The animals that we have remaining are so emaciated we do not know how we can revive them so that they can regain their weight. We've lost around 110 cattle, about 300 goats, they were the most affected. We have about 1,100 remaining now."
:: Maria Katanga, Kona Maziwa Homestead member
"This drought has been different from the others we have experienced because we have lost all our cows that we used to milk for our children's consumption. We really depend on our livestock for food but now it's very tough, as you can see."
Kenya has been here before, most recently in 2022 when a record drought decimated livestock populations and plunged pastoralists in the East African country's arid north and northeast into a hunger crisis.
But now, as such climate disasters become more frequent, their impact is also spreading to areas that have traditionally not been deeply affected by drought such as Kajiado county, which borders the capital Nairobi and where Katanga lives.
