Health-care companies rose after one health insurer's earnings.

Shares of Centene rallied to their highest level since July after the insurer posted a lower-than-anticipated benefits ratio, suggesting it was getting medical spending under control. Insurers had been under pressure in recent months due to fears that premium revenue growth was not keeping up with increased medical spending. Among Centene's rivals, Humana and UnitedHealth rose.
