GlobalFoundries will acquire Synopsys' ARC Processor IP solutions business for an undisclosed sum.

The semiconductor manufacturer said the acquisition will accelerate new product developments and enhance capabilities to deliver solutions for wearables, robotics, artificial intelligence-driven consumer applications and advanced AI silicon.

The ARC Processor IP Solutions unit develops processor designs that chipmakers can license and build into their own semiconductors.

GlobalFoundries Chief Executive Tim Breen said the deal strengthens the company's position in processor technology by bringing Synopsys' ARC and MIPS assets under its umbrella.

Following the acquisition, Synopsys will retain its broad design IP portfolio which includes logic libraries, embedded memories, interface IP, security IP and subsystems.

The acquisition is expected to be completed in the second half of the year.
