BRUSSELS (dpa-AFX) - The EU Commission will present its proposals for reforming the so-called combustion engine ban on Tuesday afternoon. The Brussels authority wants to pave the way for new cars with combustion engine technology to be registered even after 2035.

According to previous plans, new cars in the EU should no longer be allowed to emit climate-damaging carbon dioxide when in operation from 2035 onwards. This was agreed by representatives of the EU member states and the European Parliament in 2022.

This requirement is now to be abandoned and exceptions allowed. However, additional greenhouse gas emissions are to be fully offset by other measures. It was initially unclear whether there would also be exceptions for classic gasoline and diesel vehicles.

Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) had spoken out vehemently in favor of changes in recent weeks. Other EU states also advocated for a relaxation of the requirements. The European Parliament and EU member states must also approve the Commission's proposal. It remains to be seen what compromise the institutions will agree on./mjm/DP/zb
