Shares of energy companies rose after President Trump vowed the U.S. military would strike Iran "hard" on Wednesday, following an exchange of strikes between the two nations earlier in the week.

While Trump said peace talks remained alive, hopes for a near-term return of normalcy to the Strait of Hormuz are fading. U.S.-traded oil futures rose 2.1% to $90.03 a barrel.

Separately, Trump said in a social media post that since last month the U.S. military had executed a "secret mission" to facilitate oil tankers transiting through the Strait of Hormuz.
