The Renault Group has reached agreements with Geely for the Chinese automaker to acquire a 26.4 percent stake in Renault do Brasil, its Brazilian subsidiary. This strategic move is designed to strengthen the presence of both brands in Brazil and to bring new electric and hybrid vehicles to market.

Potential partnership

This partnership reflects Renault’s ambition to expand internationally and accelerate its growth strategy. Fabrice Cambolive, Renault Group’s chief growth officer, stated that this collaboration with Geely does not rule out future partnerships with other automakers in various markets. He mentioned Chery as a potential partner, but said that no concrete plans have been confirmed yet.

Eric Li, chairman of Geely, highlighted the importance of this cooperation for exploring new markets and leveraging global technological advances. For Renault, which has been looking for strategic alliances to expand beyond Europe, this partnership is crucial. It enables the company to compete in the fast-evolving automotive landscape, despite its relatively smaller scale.

Shared resources

The agreement gives Geely access to Renault’s Ayrton Senna industrial complex in São José dos Pinhais for vehicle assembly and distribution via Renault do Brasil’s existing network. In return, Renault gains access to Geely’s advanced vehicle architectures, particularly the GEA platform, enabling it to expand into new market segments in Brazil.

Geely’s participation will also help optimize Renault’s underutilized Brazilian production facility. The partnership is part of Renault’s plan to introduce more than eight new models outside Europe, starting with the Kardian SUV and the larger Boreal SUV, both of which will launch in Brazil.

Expansion plans

Geely aims to leverage Renault’s established presence in Brazil, a key Latin American market, to accelerate its business expansion. The collaboration marks an important step for both automakers as they seek to capitalize on growth opportunities in emerging markets and drive innovation in the automotive industry.
